Cleaning your ducts can vastly improve the air you breathe in your home and reduce allergy symptoms for sensitive sinuses. Clean indoor air will also help you sleep better at night, with less eyes and nose irritations. If you’ve never had your air ducts cleaned, your furnace and air conditioning systems might be pushing excess dust, dirt, and allergens into the air. When you’re ready for fresh indoor air, you can make an appointment with your local furnace cleaning company to have your duct system cleaned for the year.
Book an Appointment
When you start to notice extra dust layers collecting around your home, you’ll know you’re due for an air duct cleaning appointment. You’ll want to book an appointment every two or so years, depending on where you live and whether you have sensitive allergies or not.
What Equipment Is Used for Cleaning Air Ducts?
Professional HVAC cleaners will have specialty, state-of-the-art equipment that they will bring with them to the appointment. They’ll bring their truck to your home, along with an industrial vacuum, specific attachments, and other handheld tools to give your ducts a thorough cleaning.
Access to Air Ducts
To begin the cleaning process, your duct cleaning specialist will need to gain access to the ductwork. They’ll start by cutting a 10″ hole into the air duct, either to the side or at the rear of the furnace. Different HVAC companies use different vacuums with hose sizes varying from 8″ to 10″ in diameter. At Clean Air Solutions, we use a powerful vacuum with a 10″ hose. If you’ve previously used another company, we’ll try to use the same spot when possible, only enlarging the hole to fit our hose. However, if the previous company did not cut the hole in the proper location, we would need to cut a new hole.
When we are finished cleaning the air ducts, we seal off the hole with a patch of sheet metal, mounted in place with eight screws for a completely sealed fit. The patch will have no effect on your furnace’s performance and allows for easy access during future duct cleanings.
The Duct Cleaning Process
Before the duct cleaning service begins, we’ll walk through your home to inspect your HVAC system. Next, a horsehair filter is placed on the heat exchanger to catch debris from the vacuum’s powerful suction. Using a filter prevents tiny pieces of debris from falling into the coils of your furnace, which are very difficult to clean.
Once the filter is secured in place, we feed the large vacuum hose into your home to your furnace, either through a door or window, depending on the configuration of your home. After we’re done cleaning, we’ll seal the hole with the patch plate.
The Results of Duct Cleaning
The process of cleaning your air ducts will take around two hours to complete, depending on the size of your home. When the appointment is complete, you’ll notice less dust and debris collecting on your furniture, floors, and carpets. Air duct cleaning can also help prolong the life of your furnace by keeping the entire system clean and operating smoothly.
Another service that is often paired with duct cleaning is the dryer vent service. If it’s been a few years since you last had your dryer vent cleaned out, it might be time to set up a service. Lint that builds up can be a health and safety hazard. Cleaning out dryer vents and air ducts in the same appointment will also save you time and money.
What Happens Next?
In between duct cleaning service appointments, you can help minimize the collection of allergens and debris from settling into your air ducts by vacuuming regularly, especially if you have pets that shed. Changing your air filter every 2-3 months can also help improve your indoor air quality and help keep particles out of your indoor air. You can also book your annual appointment for the following year. When you book with Clean Air Solutions, we’ll call and remind you about the appointment ahead of time, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting.
